Molly at her loom

I am Molly Thia Kurland and I have been weaving since 1972. I started out studying with world- renowned designer Geraldine True at the Berkeley Tapestry Works in Berkeley, California and began a lifelong love of weaving yarn into fabric. I have made everything from scarves and shawls to jackets and garments and sold my work at craft fairs and art shows throughout Northern California.

The weaving process is rather complicated and begins with winding hundreds of yards of yarn on a warping reel and then transferring the yarn to a loom. I do my weaving on a Gilmore four harness floor loom. The pattern is threaded through the metal heddles (see closeup) and that determines the fabric design. The pattern is also determined by the foot pattern, or treadles, that choose which heddles to lift for each row that is woven.

The creation of hand-woven fabric consists of a combination of pattern, color and texture, which are blended together for the complete design. For me, that blending is the most creative and enjoyable part.

I began my handbag line in 2001. Right now I have 3 styles of handbags and will be adding to it as time goes on. Please keep checking back for new designs. I work at my studio in Sonoma County, California. I do all the work myself; the weaving and sewing.
